Adelaide fans will get the rare chance to see an American Sidecar rider in action this weekend when Californian Joe Jones competes in the Oceania Sidecar Championship round at Gillman Speedway.
35-year-old Jones is a legend of American Sidecar racing. He is a seven-times National Champion and has given literally thousands of hours to the sport and the growth of the Sidecar division in America in recent times is in a large part down to his leadership and passion.
The Gillman track must seem like a long track to Jones as it is almost double the size of his home track in America, the legendary Costa Mesa Speedway in California which is only 169 metres compared to Gillman’s 300 metres. However, he showed in some support class rides last Saturday night, that he has the skills to adapt to the different track size and bike set-up and actually won his last ride ahead of Sydney youngster Shane Hudson who is also in Saturday night’s Oceania Championship. A bold showing by Jones during the Series will hopefully further enhance the interest in Sidecar racing in his home land.
