Championship Triple Treat at Gillman Speedway Saturday night - November 2013
November 19, 2013 by Gillman Media
The second meeting of the 2013/14 summer speedway season at Gillman, this Saturday night, 23 November, will feature three track championships.
The feature event will be the CBS Bins Gillman Solo Championship, but the support events will also feature Division 2 Championships for Solos and Sidecars.
The CBS Bins Gillman Solo Championship will be contested by seven leading riders, led by defending champion Shane Parker.
Parker, who raced in Europe for 21 years before returning to live Adelaide in 2012, won last season’s Championship ahead of Robert Branford, Max Fricke and Justin Sedgmen, and they are all back to contest the title again this season.
Since last season, Branford has won the British Under 21 Championship, while Fricke is the current Australian Under 21 Champion and Sedgmen is the current Victorian Champion.
Completing the line-up will be local riders Arlo Bugeja, Robert Medson and Sam Martin. Martin is one of only two riders to have won the track championship twice (in 2010 and 2012). The other is Kevin Doolan who won the inaugural championship in 2003 and again the following year, 2004.
Restricting the championship to the best seven riders will mean each rider meets each opponent twice which should ensure some exciting heat racing leading up to the semi-final and all-important final.

The same format will be used to decide the Division 2 Solo championship, which will contested by riders from three states.
Last season’s runner-up, Brady Webb, is returning from Perth where he finished second in the Western Australian Championship last Saturday night, while 2012 winner Sean Peterson, Bob Stoneham, Jack Fallon and Brodie Waters will represent Victoria. The home state will be represented by Adelaide’s Seth Hickey and the Riverland’s Gary Fisher.
Fallon, who has just graduated from the junior ranks, and Waters, who is a leading road racing rider who was racing in the World Supersport Championship in Jerez (Spain) last month, only have a couple of meetings’ experience but both were outstanding in the opening Gillman meeting, with race times not far off the division 1 times, and they look to be the riders to beat.

With the leading Sidecar riders competing interstate this weekend it has created an opportunity for a Division 2 Sidecar Championship to also be contested and it will be deciding by thirteen riders competing over thirteen heats, a semi-final and final.
The favourites will be Daniel Puddy/Luke Puddy, Shane Evans/Kane Turner, Brenten Dwyer/Adam Pfitzner and Arron Hartwig/Teagan Hartwig, with Aaron Silvy/Matthew Barkla and Shane Rudloff/Damian Egan likely to challenge for a place in the final.

Directions:
The best way to get to Gillman Speedway is off Hanson Road. If you are coming from the eastern and southern suburbs, get on to Hanson road off Torrens Road or Grand Junction Road, travel north on Hanson road over the train line then take the first road on the left, which is Wilkins road.
From the northern suburbs, travel down the new Port Adelaide expressway and take the Hanson Road exit. Once on Hanson Road, take the first exit on your right, this is Wilkins road.
From the western suburbs, Wilkins Road is the continuation of Bedford Street, north of Eastern Parade.
For interstate visitors flying into Adelaide and getting a hire car, Gillman is about 30 minutes’ drive from the airport. The easiest and most direct way, if not going to your accommodation first is: On leaving the airport, turn left onto Sir Donald Bradman Drive. Continue along Sir Donald Bradman Drive until you reach the end of the airports grounds and turn right onto Tapleys Hill Road. Just keep going on Tapleys Hill Road until you can’t go any further. That’s Port Road. Turn left onto Port Road. You can only turn left, you can’t go straight ahead or turn right, so pretty easy to this point. Continue down Port Road for about 1 km to the first intersection which is Grand Junction road and turn right. You only go 700 metres along Grand Junction Road over a bridge over a railway line. Stay in the left lane because at the bottom of the bridge you turn left into Gray Terrace. Go to the end of Gray Terrace and turn right (you can’t go straight ahead) onto Bedford Street. Just keep going on that Road until you get to the speedway. About 2 kms. The whole trip is about 20kms, and half-an-hour depending on traffic lights. Once you are on Tapleys Hill Road you can’t really go wrong. You only have to make three or four turns and most of those are simple.
Accommodation:
There is plenty of accommodation in Adelaide and suburbs, within 20-30 minutes of the Speedway, ranging from five star hotels to caravan parks and backpacker hostels. The Pavlos Motel on Main North Road, Pooraka offers a discount to speedway fans but you must ring the motel direct and ask for the Gillman Speedway discount. Full details are on the Gillman website under the information/accommodation tab.
