Disappointment as Young Lions tour cancelled - October 2013
October 9, 2013 by Gillman Media
There was massive disappointment for the riders, promoters and spectators this week when the Boocock Young Lions Solo tour of Australia was officially cancelled.
The tour was actually cancelled a week ago but several of the track promoters have been feverishly working behind the scenes to see if any of the tour could be salvaged, and at one stage it appeared at least the Perth leg of the tour would go ahead, but the tour is now officially off.
The cancellation came about following a serious accident last Thursday week, which left Marcus Williams, the prime mover and shaker of the Darren and Sharon Boocock Scholarship, with several fractures to his leg and facing an extended period of several months in traction.
After his injuries were assessed he called an emergency meeting of his Townsville-based support group and it was initially agreed that due to the advanced state of planning of the major sponsors at Pinjar Park the commitments in WA would be honoured but the extent of the logistics required to keep the rest of the tour on the road meant it was just a bridge too far for everyone concerned, but now, as stated, the Young Lions will not be coming at all.
Williams has thanked everyone involved with the tour for all the hard work that had gone into making it an eagerly-awaited part of our speedway season, and is pretty much gutted that this will mean the end of a personal dream.
As far as Gillman Speedway is concerned, as the Young Lions fixture was an extra meeting only added to the calendar (13 December) to accommodate the Young Lions, this meeting has now been deleted from the calendar.
