Solo stars to race for the Leigh Adams medal at Gillman
Power Production Media Release 18 May 2024
A star studded international solo field will contest the prestigious Leigh Adams Medal at this summer's International Speedway Masters, scheduled for Gillman Speedway Stadium, in Adelaide.
The International Speedway Masters, arguably the biggest event on next season’s domestic speedway calendar, will feature an elite field of international sidecars on night one (December 27); and culminate with the staging of the Leigh Adams Medal, on night two (December 28).
Leigh Adams, an icon of Australian Motorcycle Speedway, won ten national senior titles, more than any other rider in history, whilst establishing himself as one of the sport’s elite riders on the international stage. The Mildura born legend also won the World Under 21 Championship, a Commonwealth Final and a host of major international events.
International Speedway Masters organiser, David Tapp, says creating the Leigh Adams Medal is highly appropriate.
“Leigh is an out and out legend in our sport and he deserves this recognition of his glittering international career, which included contesting the elite SGP Series with absolute distinction.
“Leigh was also the most successful rider in the history of the International Speedway Masters, during its golden era between 1995 and 2000. He won the event in 1997, 1998 and 2000, defeating the best riders in the world.
“Given that I’ve decided to re-invent the International Speedway Masters, albeit, into two-night format, it’s a no brainer that Leigh should be recognised for his incredible exploits as a professional rider.
“Leigh will be in attendance at Gillman Speedway, as a guest of honour, and he’ll present the Medals to the top three place-getters at the end of the solo event on night two,” David concluded.
Meanwhile, Leigh Adams says he’s humbled and excited to be taking part in what will undoubtedly be a massive event at Gillman Speedway Stadium.
“It’s a great honour to be involved in this event and for Tappy to be re-creating the feel of the International Masters Series is fantastic,” Leigh enthused.
“We had some truly great years racing back in the day, so I’m very much looking forward to it. Gillman was pretty much my second home during my racing career so I can’t wait,” Leigh concluded.
The International Speedway Masters promises to be a two night event not to be missed, featuring an elite field of international sidecar stars on night one and several of the world’s best solo riders, from various countries, contesting the December 28 Leigh Adams Medal.
A major announcement is imminent, in relation to the sidecar night (December 27) in coming days.
Further details relating to the rider line-up, for both nights, the race format, corporate sponsorship and VIP hospitality packages will be announced in coming weeks.
Meantime, online tickets for the event will go on sale July 1, 2024. Watch this space!
