Young British Speedway Riders Headed For Gillman - September 2013
September 10, 2013 by Gillman Media
A team of young British Speedway riders, riding under the name of the Boocock Young Lions, are headed for Gillman Speedway later this year as part of an Australian wide tour.
The team has been put together by Townsville-based former British rider Marcus Williams and is a continuation of the successful Darren and Sharon Boocock Speedway Scholarship Tours he has organised for several years now.
Having been an ex-speedway rider himself, Williams noticed the decline in both the quality and quantity of young English riders, and he and some colleagues decided to do something about this decline, by bringing promising young riders to Australia to gain valuable experience on our well prepared tracks in the British off-season.
Thus the Darren and Sharon Boocock Speedway Scholarship was started in memory of Darren and Sharon who were tragically taken from their family and friends in a road accident, and it has grown in popularity each season, until this season Williams has been able to achieve his ambition of bringing out a full team for an Australian wide tour, starting in Western Australia and finishing in Queensland.
The team, spearheaded by 22-year-old Richie Worrell, will appear at Gillman twice, once in the South Australian Championship meeting on Saturday 7 December, and again 6 days later on Friday, 13 December, in a team match against a Gillman Speedway select team which will be managed by former international rider Shane Parker.
The full Boocock Young Lions team is:
Richie Worrall, the team captain, and at age 22 the oldest rider in the team along with his twin brother Steven. Richie rides with King’s Lynn in the British Elite League, and with Newcastle in the Premier League where he is their number one rider averaging 8.54 point per match which is currently the seventh highest average in the Premier League.
Kyle Newman, 21 and Tom Perry, 20, who both ride for Somerset in the Premier League where they are team-mates of four Australian riders, Jason Doyle, Nick Morris, Josh Grajczonek and Alex Davies. Perry also rides for the Isle of Wight in the National League.
Ashley Morris, 19, rides with Workington in the Premier League and Dudley in the National League.
Steven Worrall, 22, rides with Redcar in the PL and King’s Lynn in the NL.
Matt Williamson (21, Buxton) and Dan Greenwood (20, Dudley) ride in the National League and are the least experienced riders in the team, along with the eighth rider who is 16-year-old Hayden Sims from New Zealand.
