Gillman Speedway to honour Sidecar legend - August 2016
August 9, 2016 by Gillman Media
The guest of honour at this year’s annual Gillman Classic Speedway Championship meeting (Saturday, 15 October) will be the legendary Western Australian Sidecar Champion Dennis Nash.
Nash was the first ever rider from WA to win the Australian Speedway Sidecar Championship (Newcastle 1976) and went on to win 5 Australian Titles, 9 Western Australian Titles, 3 Australian Best Pairs Titles, and 5 Aub Lawson medals as the fairest and best competitor at Perth’s Claremont Showground Speedway.
His fifth Australian Championship win, at Mildura in 1989, broke the record for the most number of wins which had been held by the great Jimmie Davies (4 wins) since 1951.
Nash and his late passenger Jeff Gittus were inducted into the Speedway Hall of Fame in 2011.
The Classic Championship meeting is a family night of old time speedway action, which marks the transition between the Sunday morning winter practice meetings and the professional Saturday night summer season, and is usually contested by riders from all of the Australian mainland states. The classes this year will be 2 Valve Solos (riders aged 40 or over), 2 Valve Solos (riders aged under 40), 4 Valve Upright Solos, British/European/American Sidecars, Japanese Sidecars, Post Classic Sidecars, Evolution Sidecars plus Laydown Solos (riders aged 40 or over, non-championship class) and Three Quarter Midgets (demonstrations).
