Sidecar World Cup confirmed for Gillman Speedway - December 2017

The Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) has confirmed the FIM 1000cc Speedway Sidecar World Cup will once again be conducted at Adelaide’s Gillman Speedway Stadium.
This is the third year this event has been allocated to Gillman and Speedway Manager Dave Parker couldn’t be happier.
“We were confident we were going to get it, but nothing can be taken for granted. The FIM has a difficult job, assessing the merits of the venues which apply for the various international events, but I’m pleased to say the FIM Bureau has again acknowledged how good we are doing with this event.
“It isn’t just handed to us on a plate. We spent a couple of years ensuring we fully conformed with all the FIM requirements, before we even applied for the first event in 2016, so to get the event three years running is something all our officials, staff and volunteers can be very proud of.”
As it past seasons the World Cup will be part of a three day programme.
“We’ll have the Festival of Speed on Good Friday as we have done in recent years. The Festival is static display of all kinds of vehicles and is free to enter. In the past we’ve had everything from remote controlled scaled down sprintcars to monster trucks, and everything in between.
“On the Saturday night, 31 March we have the FIM Oceania Sidecar Championship, and on the Sunday night, 1 April, the World Cup, with the best riders in the World in both events.
“Included in the overseas riders this year, is British champion Mark Cossar, who is one of the most successful overseas riders to have raced in Australia.
“He’ll be heading a full contingent of riders from the UK, New Zealand and the USA, all hoping to strip Australia of the World Cup title.”
Details of the riders taking part will be announced when each country’s controlling body make their selections.
In the meantime their will be plenty of world class sidecar action at Gillman leading up to the international events including the 4 round Nankang Tyres/Mitch Chassis Sidecar Super Prix, which includes the top eight from last season’s Australian Championship, and the South Australian Sidecar Championship.
