Interstate Sidecar riders at Gillman Speedway
Gillman Media, 11 January 2023
Riders from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland will head to Adelaide this week to take on the local South Australian stars in the Bowes Family Sidecar Cup when Sidecars make only their second appearance of the season at Gillman Speedway on Saturday night (14 January).
Leading the interstate riders will be current Queensland champions Tyler Moon and Adam Lovell who are making the long trip from Townsville. Moon/Lovell won their state championship in Brisbane in November, when they were the top scorers in the heats and then led home Darrin Treloar/Blake Cox in the final.
The other visitors are Rick Stephens/Nick O’Brien and Max Howse/Adam Commons from New South Wales, and Byren Gates/Michael O’Loughlin, Chris Walker/April Cottrell and Chris Dess/Chloe Ackerley from Victoria.
The local challenge will be led by Mick Headland/Brenton Kerr, Shane Rudloff/Scott Morris, Damien Niesche/Mitchell Spear and Kym Menadue/Shane Dolan, but their only other appearance this season, in the Gillman track championship, showed there is a lot of strength all the way down the list, so there could be some outside chances who make it to the finals.
Mick Headland/Brenton Kerr, Byren Gates/Michael O’Loughlin and Shane Rudloff (with Damian Egan) finished in that order (behind Mark Plaisted who is not riding in this meeting) in the final of the Gillman Championship, while Max Howse (with Riley Commons), Chris Walker/April Cottrell, Aaron Silvy/Jaron Silvy, Rick Stephens/Nick O’Brien and Stephen Fowler/Ben Goodridge made it through to the semi-finals.
Support events will consist of another strong line-up of Sidecars, Flat Track Solos, a limited number of 500cc Solos, plus junior events.
The support events should be as good as the main event as a number of riders could easily argue they should be in the Cup events. They will be out to impress again this week, while the pressure will be on some of the riders in the top 16 to do enough to hold their places for the next major Sidecar meeting.
The meeting will be livestreamed through the website link below. Please note this is the only official livestreaming link, any others touted on facebook sites are scams.
